Chemical giant Union Carbide, a Fortune 500 company, leads the world in production ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol through its basic chemicals and polymers segment. Its specialty and intermediary chemicals segment is one of the largest manufacturers of polyethylene (the most widely used plastic in the world); it also makes solvents, coatings, latex, resins, emulsions, and plasticizers. Union Carbide is participating in a joint venture. with Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas company, Petronas, to build a $2 billion petrochemical complex in that country.

HomeGold Financial (formerly Emergent Group) originates, services, and sells residential mortgages and small-business loans to those with credit problems. Its mortgage loans, provided primarily under the HomeGold name and through 700 mortgage bankers, are used for debt consolidation, home improvements, and education. Its small-business loans, most of them US Small Business Administration loans, are used for acquisitions, refinancing, and working capital; they range from
$100,000 to $1.5 million.

SMITH BARNEY, INC.

Smith Barney (aka Salomon Smith Barney Holdings) a subsidiary of Travelers Group, is a securities powerhouse formed from the 1997 combination of investment banking firm Salomon Brothers (a leading global bond trader) with Travelers' Smith Barney (one of Wall Street's leading brokerage firms). In addition to brokerage services, Salomon Smith Barney provides asset management and financial research and advice. Salomon Smith Barney operates in Asia, Australia, Europe, South America, and the US. Travelers Group has agreed to merge with banking giant Citicorp, which could extend Salomon Smith Barney's worldwide reach via Citicorp's thousands of branches.
